Massage Instructor Training – “Teaching Adult Learners”

We have designed, developed, and present this program for those professionals who desire to become effective Massage Therapy Instructors in a formal school environment and for those who are experts in their field who want to effectively teach their expertise as Continuing Education Providers. Our courses incorporate current educational research into adult learning, motivational strategies, evaluation techniques, and especially focus on the application of these methodologies in the massage classroom.

Over 148 Texas therapists took their instructor training with us because we teach you the Why, not just the What and How.

30 total classroom hours with full Texas CE credits - $500.00

Why Do Massage Instructors Need This Training?

The massage classroom is different than any other educational environment in a number of ways:

  1. Unlike "Workforce Training", where the entire focus is on preparing students to obtain employment, massage instructors must also train students to function independent of supervision...as entrepenuers, not just as supervised employees, since both career paths are possibilities. This preparation for their students to enter a dual career (healthcare provider and business owner/operator) substantially expands the role requirements of the instructor and the attitudes that should be developed in the student.
  2. Unlike "Corporate Training", every student is in the classroom by choice - it is not a requirement of the job, to keep a job, or for advancement on the job. The instructor must remain cognizant that the student is also the customer...they are paying for their perceived needs to be met and could leave the class if they believe these needs aren't being addressed by the instructor.
  3. Unlike all other learning environments, including other healthcare trainings, new students are asked to remove most of their clothing and lay covered on a table, allowing their fellow classmates to expose and touch most of their body areas while practicing hands-on techniques which were just demonstrated by the instructor. In continuing education environments, perfect strangers are asked to engage in these activities with just a cursory introduction to each other. This forces students to expand peer relationships beyond normal educational parameters and often requires instructors to quickly recognize dysfunctional situations and engage in creative classroom management techniques.

No other learning environment places students in such peer relationships, and all of these environmental parameters combined can necessitate - more than in any other adult education environment - that the instructor be trained in teaching methodologies and classroom management techniques specific to massage therapy.

The Core Course

Our primary Core course is Teaching Adult Learners (30 hours). This course was originally developed in 2001 to meet the 30-hour training in adult education requirement established by the Texas Department of Health for Massage Therapy Instructors. After three years of experimentation with numerous formats, this course is now presented as a two weekend format for the convenience of working learners. The course is focused on developing skills in basic methodologies for preparation, presentation, application, and evaluation techniques specific to the massage therapy classroom. This course is the required course for State of Texas instructor qualification...additional courses are not a requirement.
